Ode to My Daughter
My beloved daughter, you are my light,
Your laughter lifts the sorrow from my night,
You find jovial humour in the dark,
Your wide grin blazes with a joyous spark.
You are so much like me
And part of the reason I like me
And I know I love you.
Your mood can turn over the smallest thing,
You're the Princess of rage, where I am King,
When that blind fury takes you there's no hope,
A victim of your lack of will to cope.
You are so much like me
And sometimes I don't like me
But I know I love you.
You suffer foolishness of others not,
Inconsistent tales make you lose the plot,
You are hard on those that misunderstand,
Though you cannot take any reprimand.
You are so much like me
It can be hard for others to like me
But just know that I love you.
You beat yourself up over small mistakes,
Internalised rage until something breaks,
You can miss beauty blinded by your woe,
In defeat you exclaim, "I just don't know!".
You are so much like me
Now you see why I don't like me
But please know that I love you.
You are becoming sadder with each day,
A looming storm that will not blow away,
The weight of the world seems to press you down,
Childhood smiles slowly replaced by a frown.
You are so much like me
Please don't end up like me
Because I love you...
