Why Hull

Let me tell you a tale you won’t find dull,
Of a city some deemed forgettable,
But changed history something powerful,
You might be surprised, but I do not ‘bull’,

You read the title; that city is Hull.
Twas made a King’s Town by The First King Ed,
(Though the Norse before named it ‘Wyke’ instead,)
Then in with King that two wives would behead,

But no step into Hull we let Charles tread,
The refusal though to Civil War led.
So why is it “Hull” and not “Kingston” though?
That’s that town through which the river does flow,

And it’s fine for ‘Newcastle’ to be so,
Yet the reason is something they don’t know,
We are no ‘King’s Town’, of that we made sure.
So please let this tale never go unheard,

About the troubles this country once shared,
And the city that did what no-one dared,
Stood up for freedom, rebellion declared,
That’s why it’s “Hull’, not “Kingston”, we’ve preferred.
